He called the districts\u2019 policies \u201cdiscriminatory\u201d and said they were a \u201csevere risk\u201d to trans and non-binary students.<\/p>\n<p>Five years ago the New Jersey Department of Education\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/new-jersey-schools-dont-have-to-inform-parents-of-kids-gender-choices\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">issued regulations<\/a>\u00a0making gender-based decisions dependent upon students, not parents. New Jersey and federal law \u201crequire schools to ensure a safe and supportive environment for transgender students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If a student wants a Tylenol for a headache, however, his\/her parent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ramsey.k12.nj.us\/Page\/1561\" rel=\"noopener\">must be notified<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MORE:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/teachers-race-and-gender-vocab-packet-jeered-by-parents-cheered-by-academics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Teacher\u2019s \u2018race and gender\u2019 vocab packet jeered by parents, cheered by academics<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Marc Zitomer, attorney for the Marlboro Township School Board, said his district \u201cvehemently disagreed\u201d with Platkin and added he was \u201cconfident that the board\u2019s amended policy properly balances parental and student rights.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/news\/2023\/06\/nj-attorney-general-sues-3-school-districts-following-outrage-concerning-transgender-policies.html\" rel=\"noopener\">From the article<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In\u00a0Middletown, the school must \u201cnotify a student\u2019s parents or guardian\u201d of the student\u2019s \u201casserted gender identity\u201d when students request a public social transition accommodation, such as a name or pronoun change, or a bathroom, locker room, club, or sports accommodation.<\/p>\n<p>In Marlboro, school staff must notify parents or guardians of any student\u2019s \u201cchange in gender identity or expression.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And in Manalapan, the school must notify a student\u2019s parents or guardian of the student\u2019s asserted gender identity when a student requests a public social transition accommodation.
