Forty of the nation\u2019s fifty states don\u2019t have enough money to meet their obligations, with a total of $1.5 trillion in growing unfunded liabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While most states are in hot water, the problem is worst in states with a Democrat governor alongside a Democrat controlled legislature. A new study from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.truthinaccounting.org\/library\/doclib\/FSOS-booklet-2019.pdf\">Truth in Accounting<\/a>&nbsp;analyzed the fiscal health of the fifty states and&nbsp; and the trend was clear. The more Republican control, the better (and less-worse) fiscal health those states are in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The worst run states and their unfunded liabilities per citizen, according to their \u201c2019 Financial State of the States,\u201d are:Advertisement<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statedatalab.org\/state_data_and_comparisons\/detail\/vermont\">Vermont<\/a>, -$19,000<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statedatalab.org\/state_data_and_comparisons\/detail\/new-york\">New York<\/a>, -$20,500<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statedatalab.org\/state_data_and_comparisons\/detail\/california\">California<\/a>, -$21,800<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statedatalab.org\/state_data_and_comparisons\/detail\/kentucky\">Kentucky<\/a>, -$25,700<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statedatalab.org\/state_data_and_comparisons\/detail\/delaware\">Delaware<\/a>, -$27,100<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statedatalab.org\/state_data_and_comparisons\/detail\/hawaii\">Hawaii<\/a>, -$31,200<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statedatalab.org\/state_data_and_comparisons\/detail\/massachusetts\">Massachusetts<\/a>, -$31,200<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statedatalab.org\/state_data_and_comparisons\/detail\/connecticut\">Connecticut<\/a>, -$51,800<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statedatalab.org\/state_data_and_comparisons\/detail\/illinois\">Illinois<\/a>, -$52,600<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statedatalab.org\/state_data_and_comparisons\/detail\/new-jersey\">New Jersey<\/a>, -$65,100<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Kentucky is the only state on the list with a Republican controlled legislature (and still had a Republican governor during the time-frame of this study). Every single other state has a Democrat controlled legislature. The only hints of Red is Massachusetts\u2019 and Vermont\u2019s Republican governors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The best states actually had a surplus per citizen. They are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statedatalab.org\/state_data_and_comparisons\/detail\/alaska\">Alaska<\/a>, $74,200 per taxpayer<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statedatalab.org\/state_data_and_comparisons\/detail\/north-dakota\">North Dakota<\/a>, $30,700<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statedatalab.org\/state_data_and_comparisons\/detail\/wyoming\">Wyoming<\/a>, $20,800<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statedatalab.org\/state_data_and_comparisons\/detail\/utah\">Utah<\/a>, $5,300<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statedatalab.org\/state_data_and_comparisons\/detail\/idaho\">Idaho<\/a>, $2,900<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statedatalab.org\/state_data_and_comparisons\/detail\/tennessee\">Tennessee<\/a>, $2,800<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statedatalab.org\/state_data_and_comparisons\/detail\/south-dakota\">South Dakota<\/a>, $2,800<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statedatalab.org\/state_data_and_comparisons\/detail\/nebraska\">Nebraska<\/a>, $2,000<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statedatalab.org\/state_data_and_comparisons\/detail\/oregon\">Oregon<\/a>, $1,600<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statedatalab.org\/state_data_and_comparisons\/detail\/iowa\">Iowa<\/a>, $700<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Alaska is an outlier due to oil wealth combined with a low population, and has a split legislature with a Republican governor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every single other state with the exception of Oregon has a Republican governor and legislature. Nebraska is technically an exception in that they\u2019re the only state with a unicameral legislature \u2013 but that is Republican controlled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The next nine states on the list have relatively low levels of unfunded liabilities under $2,500 per citizen, and are majority Republican controlled (with Virginia as the only exception).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This all being said, the majority of states are still being mismanaged.
