International air travellers will in future need to prove they have been vaccinated against Covid-19 in order to board Qantas flights, the airline says.<\/p>\n

The CEO of Qantas Airlines says that the industry is in agreement that in the future proof of Covid-19 vaccines will be required for international travel.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
The Australian flag carrier\u2019s boss, Alan Joyce, said the move would be \u201ca necessity\u201d when vaccines are available.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think that\u2019s going to be a common thing talking to my colleagues in other airlines around the globe,\u201d he said, adding that there is unanimous support for the vaccine requirement.<\/p>\n
Australia shut down its international borders early in the pandemic and required those returning to quarantine.<\/p>\n
The country has more recently relied on lockdowns, widespread testing and aggressive contact tracing to push daily infections nationwide close to zero.<\/p>\n
In an interview with Australia\u2019s Nine Network on Monday, Mr Joyce said Qantas was looking at ways of changing its terms and conditions for international travellers as the industry, which has been hit hard by travel restrictions, looks at ways of moving forward.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe will ask people to have a vaccination before they can get on the aircraft\u2026 for international visitors coming out and people leaving the country we think that\u2019s a necessity,\u201d he told the broadcaster.<\/p>\n
In August, Australia\u2019s Prime Minister Scott Morrison said it was likely that any successful vaccine would become \u201cas mandatory as you could possibly make it\u201d. \u201cThere are always exemptions for any vaccine on medical grounds, but that should be the only basis,\u201d he told radio station 3AW.<\/p>\n
That same month, Qantas reported an annual loss of almost $1.46 billion loss because of the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. Joyce said at the time that trading conditions were the worst in the airline\u2019s 100-year history and that \u201cthe impact of Covid on all airlines is clear \u2014 it\u2019s devastating and we will take measures necessary to protect the flying public.\u201d<\/p>\n
On Monday, the Australian state of New South Wales (NSW) reopened its border with neighboring Victoria for the first time since infections soared in Victoria\u2019s state capital, Melbourne, in July.<\/p>\n
Flights between the city and the NSW capital Sydney \u2013 normally one of the world\u2019s busiest routes \u2013 had been cancelled.<\/p>\n
Arriving in Sydney on a Qantas flight for the first time in months, passengers were greeted by people at the terminal holding up signs that read \u201cwelcome back\u201d.<\/p>\n
More than 20 additional flights were scheduled between the two states on Monday. \u201cToday is the day I get to meet my four-month-old grandson for the first time,\u201d one passenger told the BBC.<\/p>\n
